What is Psychological First Aid?

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is an evidence-informed modular approach developed in the United States to help children, adolescents, adults, and families in the immediate aftermath of disaster and terrorism. PFA is designed to reduce the initial distress caused by traumatic events and to foster short- and long-term adaptive functioning and coping.

Sessions are structured to prioritize 1) safety and rapport, 2) gentle unpacking of experiences, and 3) identifying resources and a forward action plan.

PFA techniques have been shown to be effective across a wide range of contexts, cultures, demographic groups, and developmental levels.
